On March 18, 21 students from Richmond Secondary School traveled to Thailand to assist in a humanitarian mission as well as experience the people and culture of the country. For the first time in the five year history of Global Perspectives 12, you were invited to share in this life changing experience.
TRIP ITINERARY
The adventure begins Saturday, March 18, 2000 when the departs from Vancouver, en route to Bangkok. There is a brief layover in Tokyo, which will allow for some much needed stretching and a brief ogling of Japanese culture. Then off to Bangkok, for an overnight stay in one of the busiest cities in the world.
The following morning, the class will board yet another plane for a short journey to the Northern City of Chiang Mai. From here, the group will travel by bus to the small community of Mae Sarieng, which is approximately 185 km south from Chiang Mai. Mae Sarieng is a town with a distinct “border outpost” feel, and many people visit this area of Thailand for trekking excursions.
From Mae Sarieng, the students will be bussed to and from the Mae Kong Pae village, where the focus of the excursion will take place over a six day period. Their goal is to aid in the construction of a new kindergarten building for the Mae Kong Pae School and to create structural improvements to the local Child Care Centre.
Once the project is completed, the group will leave Mae Kong Pae and return to Mae Sarieng for two days of trekking. On Wednesday, March 29, we head to Chiang Mai for a brief stay, where we will work at an elephant camp and explore craft villages.
On Friday, March 31, the group flies back to Bangkok for four days of extensive touring in the city and it’s surrounding areas. Our journey ends on Tuesday, April 4, when we head back to Vancouver. Home sweet home!
